Hi, My name is Tyler, and I am the founder of Heart of Music. I am offering private piano and music tuition, and am dedicated to helping people of any age and skill level develop a greater understanding and appreciation for the art of music.
Where my music journey started
Growing up in a small town called Ulladulla on the NSW south coast, I was enrolled in my first piano lessons at the age of 8. My teacher Beryl Donnelly was an amazing woman who taught with kindness and compassion. It was her attitude towards music and her teaching style, that influenced me the most as a young musician. Very early on I decided that I didn’t want to be the most technically capable pianist. I just wanted to play music that was pretty, beautiful, and pleasing for anyone to listen to.
How I fell in love with music and started teaching music
When I was in high school I did Music for my HSC, and it was at this time I was asked to perform live for the first time. I performed Hallelujah for an assembly as part of a 4 piece band. This was the first time I was told that I had talent, and the first time that a stranger told me what I had done was beautiful. After receiving more compliments on the beauty of the music I was performing I decided to try something new. I joined the local musical production of Beauty and the Beast. It was also at this time that I had my first experience teaching music, whilst assisting some of the cast members with their songs.
Without music, life would be a mistake - Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
My learning experience at the Australian Institute of Music
The next step for me was moving to Sydney to attend the Australian Institute of Music. It was here that I met some truly incredible musicians. It was at AIM that I was able to learn about new genres of music I had previously never played before, such as Latin, Jazz, and Funk. When I finally graduated and completed my final Recital, I was able to confidently show who I am through my music. Choosing not the most difficult pieces but songs that meant something to me personally. Songs from the Heart. One song, in particular, got the same comments from all of the examiners - beautiful.
Where words fail, music speaks - Hans Christian Anderson
My current teaching experience
Since graduating I have been working as a piano teacher for a local music school. I have been able to not only teach students what I have learned for years but also learn from them. I learned that many students are a lot like I was as a child and that everyone should be taught differently. I believe that teaching and learning music should be a personalized experience. I hope to teach others what I have learned not only about playing the piano but about music in general, and how music should be not just about technique and grueling exercises, but about fun, passion, and emotion.
